Current projects

  • Agent-based fact-checking (2025-2028, NOK 3M from the Norwegian Research Council): This industrial PhD grant by the Norwegian Research Council is in collaboration with Factiverse AS on the topic of making language models reliable and compliant using agent-based fact-checking solutions.
  • NorwAI, Language and Personalization (2022-2028, NOK 8M from the Research Council of Norway): The Norwegian Research Center for AI Innovation (NorwAI) is Norway’s largest academic initiative focused on AI innovation. It coordinates research and development efforts across three universities, two research institutes, and 11 industry partners. Balog leads the Language and Personalization work package, which includes three PhD students at UiS.
  • MediaFutures, Media Content Production and Analysis (2022-2028, NOK 3M from the Research Council of Norway): The Research Centre for Responsible Media Technology & Innovation (MediaFutures) was founded with the main objective to develop responsible media technology, in particular leveraging AI technology, for the media sector. Setty leads the fact-checking task in Media Content Production & Analysis work package, which includes one PhD student at UiS.
  • Conversational Scholarly Assistant (2020-2025, USD 120k from Google): This unrestricted research grant from Google supports Balog’s work in conversational search, user modeling, transparency, and explainability, and partially funds a PhD position.

Past projects

  • From Answering Engines to Task-completion Engines (2014-2019, NOK 4M from Universitetsfondet): The aim of this project was to develop intelligent solutions to support humans in solving complex, knowledge-intensive tasks, and funded two PhD students.
